Someone once said, “Time flies when you’re having a good time.” I can’t believe that I’ve been working at Aycron for the last 15 months. I have learned so much this year.
I have been working part-time and full-time at Aycron for the last 2 years, but officially full-time for the last 15 months. As in every other services startup, my partners and I are always putting on different ‘thinking hats’ to make things happen.
This is what I’ve learned in my first entrepreneur experience:
You can’t do everything. You must delegate. When you delegate, make sure you communicate everything about the task/project. Responsibility is something you cannot delegate.
You have to be agile in decision making. You can’t take forever to take a decision. Make sure you dedicate only the necessary time to each decision. Don’t waste your time. Time is a precious resource!
You are here to help people. Always listen to what the client says and help them with their problems. Never say no when the client is asking for help. Do your best to help people.
Trust your partners. At Aycron we are six partners. When you are so many, you need to divide responsibilities and trust each one of your partners in their areas of expertise. You don’t have the time to consider each decision.
Starting up a company is the easy part. This is easy: Giving up the security of a monthly income and a comfortable software engineer position.
The hard part is working on your company every week. This is hard: Working long hours and thinking about your startup 100% of the time. You need to find balance between work and your life.
Build a team with talented people. Communicate the goals. Keep your team motivated. Then get out of their way.
Correct your mistakes as soon as you realize you made them. For example: You hired someone. You thought he was talented. He wasn’t. You gave him 1 chance, 2 chances, 3 chances. He didn’t respond. You have to let him go.
Communication is key. Keep fluid conversations with clients and your teams. It’s the only way to build the best solutions.
Have a daily TODO list. Prioritize each item and get things done. This daily TODO list should follow your long term plan. Your daily tasks have to add value to your company. If not, get them off your list!
I’m really happy about my time at Aycron. I’m very excited about the future. I can’t wait to continue growing with my company. I’m really lucky I get to work with such a talented group of people and to help our clients every week.
15 months, 10 lessons learned, 1 startup
